Center paid rupees 4,134 Crores as RDF and MDF to Punjab : MP Sahney
During the last three years, Punjab farmers received over ₹1.18 lakh crore for paddy procurement and nearly ₹88,700 crore for wheat procurement under MSP operations, reaffirming Punjab’s pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s food security. Figures were given by Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Food Distribution in rely to parliament question asked by MP Vikram Sahney.
Dr. Sahney informed that due to this procurement, in last three years Punjab government received 4,134 crore rupees as Rural Development Fund and Market fees, which is highest to any state in the country for the capital expenditure for developmental works in the state.
Dr. Sahney further demanded that the Punjab Government should immediately resume procurement of moong at MSP, which has effectively remained suspended since 2024. He pointed out that despite the MSP for moong being fixed at ₹8,780 per quintal, farmers in Punjab are presently being forced to sell their produce to private traders at prices ranging between ₹6,500 and ₹7,300 per quintal.
Dr. Sahney further stated that 28.64 LMT of additional covered storage capacity has been created in Punjab and modern silos with capacities of 9.25 LMT have been completed by the central government, while 18 LMT capacity is under implementation, which will solve the storage capacity issue of Punjab.
Dr. Sahney emphasized that this situation is discouraging farmers from adopting crop diversification and defeating the objective of reducing Punjab’s dependence on the wheat-paddy cycle. He urged Punjab Government to immediately intervene, commence procurement of moong and other crops at MSP and fulfil its commitment of extending MSP benefits to alternative crops in the interest of Punjab’s farmers.
