MP Vikram Sahney demands Immediate Action Against Parody Account Impersonating SGPC
Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha took up the issue of a parody account impersonating the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on X (formerly Twitter) with the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Dr. Sahney has strongly condemned and raised serious concerns about the account, which is operating under the name “Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Parody” (@SGPCAmritsar_) and has been active since September 2023.
Dr. Sahney said that he demands that the said Account should be blocked immediately and a thorough investigation should be initiated about the account’s activities in collaboration with platform authorities. And government should establish safeguards to prevent misuse of paid verification services by accounts impersonating religious or institutional entities.
Dr. Sahney informed that the parody account has over 13,500 followers and, alarmingly, holds a paid verification badge (blue tick), lending it unwarranted credibility. “This account is not only impersonating a revered institution like the SGPC but is also spreading hateful content against the Sikh community, creating societal discord, and confusing individuals who are unaware of its parody nature. Such misuse of social media is unacceptable.” Dr. Sahney added
Dr. Sahney stated that SGPC is the apex governing body for Sikh Gurdwaras in India and abroad, operating under the directives of Sri Akal Takht Sahib. He expressed concern that the activities of this account are tarnishing the reputation of this sacred institution and could potentially disrupt communal harmony.
