Sikhs are Indians, By Choice but not By Chance: MP Vikram Sahney
Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Punjab, while speaking on the Indian Constitution said that we should pay gratitude to the entire Sikh community who suffered the most by losing over 10 Lakh lives for sake of India during the partition.
Dr. Sahney said that it is a historical fact that Sikhs were promised special treatment in the constitution. He also added that Sikhs are Indians, By Choice but not By Chance.
Dr. Sahney raised his voice for right to practice one’s religion as enshrined in the constitution and said that supreme sacrifice in this regard was made by Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji and reminded the house that the entire Raisina Hills where North Block, South Block, President House and Parliament House are situated originally belonged to Gurudwara Sri Rakabganj Sahib in the memory of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur ji.
Dr. Sahney exhorted that in recent times incidents of reclaiming religious places of worship is threatening the spirit of tolerance. It is futile discussion to rake up the past and we should maintain Status quo of all religious places as on August 15, 1947.
Dr. Sahney urged the government that discussion on constitution cannot be complete if concerns of poor farmers are not addressed urgently as part of social and economic justice, as provided in the preamble of the constitution.
Dr. Sahney stated that as per Article 243 of the constitution there should be democratic decentralisation of power empowering Gram Sabhas and Panchayats. He also added that as per article 245 relating to the relations between union and the states, cooperative federalism should ensure that the union gives equal distribution of resources to all states without discrimination.
