Draft Gig Workers’ Social Security Rules a Timely Step; Implementation Now Key: MP Sahney

Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha today welcomed the Draft Rules for Social Security of Gig and Platform Workers, describing them as a constructive and timely evolution of the Code on Social Security, 2020, and in continuation of the assurance given by the Government in response to his intervention in Parliament.

Taking a solution-oriented approach Dr. Sahney acknowledged the critical role played by India’s startups and digital platforms in generating millions of jobs and preventing the country’s demographic dividend from turning into a demographic challenge.

Dr. Sahney demanded creation of a national gig workers’ welfare framework, co-created with various stakeholders covering healthcare, insurance and dignity at work, while preserving the competitiveness and innovation of our platforms

Dr. Sahney also urged for the effective implementation to operationalise welfare provisions for gig and platform workers, including life and disability cover, accident insurance, health benefits and old-age protection, through a structured and nationally coordinated social security framework with transparent responsibility of aggregators and seamless access to the benefits to Gig Workers.
