MP Vikram Sahney speaks over Hate Speech on Social Media in Parliament
Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament from Punjab delivered a powerful address highlighting a critical issue that threatens the social harmony of our nation: the misuse of social media platforms to spread hate based on caste, creed, and religion.
Dr. Sahney expressed deep concern over the unchecked proliferation of harmful content on social media, pointing out the alarming trend of fringe elements using these platforms to disseminate derogatory remarks “People are freely making disrespectful comments, hatered speech, provocation for various communities without any accountability.” Said Dr. Sahney
Dr. Sahney drew attention to disturbing instances where minor incidents, such as a missed catch by a player or offensive remarks that insult specific religious groups, have been amplified into hate speech. Notably, Dr. Sahney cited recent examples, including hate speech targeting a senior officer of the Indian Army by some fringe elements on social media.
Dr. Sahney has submitted a dossier on the floor of the house detailing various accounts engaged in spreading hatred irresponsibly and called for urgent action.
Dr. Sahney also highlighted a gap in the current legal framework, noting that the Information Technology Act of 2000 was made 24 years back when Social Media did not existed hence it fails to adequately address many forms of hate speech.
Dr. Sahney stated that to address this he has submitted a private member’s bill defining hate speech more clearly and proposing severe penalties for offenders. He expressed hope that the bill would soon be discussed in Parliament to enable stronger actions against hate speech.
