MP Vikram Sahney Raises Alarm Over IMF Bailout to Pakistan Amid Rising Cross-Border Terrorism
Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, MP (Rajya Sabha), has expressed serious concern over the recent approval of a $1 billion bailout to Pakistan by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program.
Dr. Sahney stated that this marks Pakistan’s 25th bailout from the IMF since 1958, underscoring a legacy of economic mismanagement, entrenched military involvement in civil affairs, and a troubling dependence on external financial lifelines.
He highlighted that IMF funds, by their fungible nature, lack adequate safeguards to prevent their diversion towards unlawful activities, including the financing of terrorist organizations.
“This concern is particularly pressing in light of Pakistan’s history of fostering militancy—more so in the wake of recent terror attacks targeting India,” Dr. Sahney added.
He also said that he sincerely hopes this financial assistance is channeled towards its pledged goals of economic stability, and not used to underwrite militarization or destabilizing pursuits, which only perpetuate cross-border tensions and hinder progress toward peaceful coexistence.
Dr. Sahney called for robust international oversight and accountability mechanisms to ensure full transparency in the use of these funds.
