MP Vikram Sahney Urges PM Modi to Extend PLI Scheme to Bicycle, Toy, and Leather Industries
Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Punjab wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocating for the extension of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to include the bicycle, toy, and leather industries. With Punjab’s bicycle industry at the forefront of this appeal, Dr. Sahney emphasizes the urgent need to bolster these sectors to enhance competitiveness and drive economic growth.
Dr. Sahney stated that the bicycle industry in Punjab, particularly centered in Ludhiana, is a vital contributor to the nation’s economy, accounting for 75% of India’s total bicycle production and 92% of bicycle parts manufacturing. However, recent data from the All-India Cycle Manufacturers Association (ACMA) reveals a concerning decline in bicycle exports, dropping from 557,523 units in the previous year to 436,720 units in the fiscal year 2023-24.
Dr. Sahney said that the key challenges hindering the industry’s growth are lack of incentives and support for innovation and quality improvement and logistical hurdles such as high inland freight costs and import duties impede the competitiveness of Indian bicycles in the global market, particularly against other Asian manufacturers.
Dr. Sahney said that he has requested the Prime Minister to extend the PLI scheme to the bicycle industry, alongside the toy and leather industries. Such an extension would provide crucial incentives and support for manufacturers to enhance quality, foster innovation, and compete effectively in the global market, this initiative will align with ‘Make in India’ vision, promoting self-reliance and competitiveness on the international stage and it will benefit economy of Punjab.
