MP Vikram Sahney demands Immediate Decongestion Measures Around Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar

Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Punjab, has reiterated the urgent need for introducing transformative infrastructure for Decongestion of traffic around Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar to Union Ministers Sh. Nitin Gadkari and Sh. Manoharlal Khattar.

In a written reply by the Minister of State of Housing and Urban Affairs to a question asked by Dr. Sahney in Rajya Sabha regarding progress of Smart City Mission in Punjab, it was informed that the three cities Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana have been selected from state of Punjab. However, Dr. Sahney demanded that Mohali and Patiala should also be included as a Smart City.

Further Dr. Sahney stated that even the three cities selected as Smart Cities have nothing visible to be called as “Smart” with utmost congestion, uncleanliness, lack of Solid Waste management etc.

Dr. Sahney emphasized that proposals such as a Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) connecting GT Road to the Golden Temple, an underground tunnel for vehicles, and multi-level parking structures near the city’s entry points are essential for relieving the old city’s chronic congestion.

Dr. Sahney stated that any project out of MRTS, Underground Tunnel, elevated monorail or capsule car system will not just solve traffic congestion but also serve as a national model for merging heritage conservation with smart mobility.

Dr. Sahney also said that Sri Darbar Sahib is spiritual heart of Sikhism and it sees over 1.5 lakh pilgrims daily, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their comfort, safety, and convenience.
