Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji birthday was celebrated as Universal Brotherhood Day in the precincts of Rashtrapati Bhawan on 13th November, 2008. This is the second time that the Gurpurab was celebrated at Rashtrapati Bhawan, earlier celebrations being held in 2005.

Floral tributes were paid at the portrait of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji by President Smt. Pratibha Patil Ji and Vice President Dr. Hamid Ansari. A Siropa and a portrait of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was presented to the Hon'ble President of India by Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Padma Shri, International President WPO. In his introductory address, Sr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney brought out various aspects of Guru Nanak Dev Ji life and his teachings. He emphasized that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a true symbol of universal brotherhood.

For him there was only one God who is eternal and timeless. For all religions the goal is the same but the path to it may be different. For him there was no cast and creed. He raised his voice against oppression of poor by rich and advocated for equality for women in the society.

Gurbani Kirtan in his melodious and captivating voice was recited by Ragi Jatha of Bhai Jasbir Singh of Ponta Sahib. The elite gathering engrossed in deep thought thoroughly enjoyed the Gurbani recital.

At the conclusion of the Gurbani recital, Ragis were honored with a memento by the former President. Sr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney was also honored by the former President on this occasion.

Refreshments at the end of the function were organised for the august gathering.
