'SAARC ECONOMIC SUMMIT/5TH SAARC BUSINESS LEADERS CONCLAVE'

It was indeed a proud and momentous evening when Anand Sharma, Hon'ble Minister of Commerce & Industry; H.E. France Morule & Padma Shri Vikramjit S. Sahney- High Commissioner & Honorary Consul General of South Africa respectively cut the cake marking the celebrations of the 20th Freedom day of South Africa on Sunday the 27th day of April 2014 at New Delhi

Speaking on the occasion, Anand Sharma said he was the proud participant of the freedom ceremony 20 years ago in pretoria and he is equally proud to be here today. Each one of the speaker, including the Minister, High Commissioner and Honorary Consul paid tributes to the great personalities including Mahatma Gandhi, Madiba and the fellow countrymen for their patience and perseverance in attaining the freedom of the country and a number of achievements after that.

Speaking on the occassion, Mr. Vikramjit Sahney stated, “ South Africa struggled hard, treading the path from bondage to freedom, of trials and tribulations, courage and sacrifices. But, today, We see a Nation that is noble, great and strong which stood fast to the ideals, even in the dark cold solitude of the colonial cells. He added,”India also has vital part to play in its freedom and, in its continued support to South – South cooperation, through BRICS, IBSA and other bilateral agreements, pledges to build greater friendship, new partnerships and pursue joint business interests with passage of time.” Mr. Sahney also announced the installation of the bust of Great Nelson Mandela at Nelson Mandela Marg, New Delhi. He further added, “Together we will succeed. As, together we were victorious yesterday against colonialism, apartheid, racism and injustice.”

The atmosphere was agog with colourful attires, South African songs, documentary films showcasing the vibrant country eager to be the frontrunner of 3rd world countries. There were congratulatory hugs and lots more as the diplomatic fraternity from several missions mingled in. Deans and Chairpersons of African diplomatic corps represented the full solidarity of the continent on this occasion. In addition, there were bureaucrats, industrialists, entrepreneurs and socialites in great numbers showering their best wishes on this occasion.

In the true spirit of celebration, there was rollicking performances by the South African Artists flown in for the occasion. The evening sizzled with wine, cheese and cheer! There was also a lavish spread of gastronomic fiesta to add to the appeasement.
